Lesson 3 - Using One Light
For the first portrait, I wanted to capture Wanki's calmness, insightfulness, and genuinely kind personality. I had him look directly into the light source which was being diffused by the white cloth board. The inverse square law is demonstrated through the observed intensity of light on the darker side of his face vs. directly in front of the light source. The shadow from his glasses also demonstrates that light travels in a straight line, so you can approximately estimate where the light source was placed in relation to his face.
For the second portrait, I merely used the light source at an angle to produce harsher shadows on his face. I also took that photo from a lower angle to portray a sense of power and dominance, like seen in many portraits of commanders and powerful leaders. Light travels in a straight line, as seen by the shadows on the left side of his face.
